Erythrodermic Psoriasis, the word itself contains, two components Psoriasis & erythroderma i.e. redness of skin. It is a generalized form of psoriasis affecting all body sites which include face, hand, feet, nails, trunk, extremities & scalp
It is a fiery redness of skin due to inflammation in psoriatic patients.
Symptoms of Erythrodermic Psoriasis
- There is severe itching, burning, & pain
- Although all symptoms of psoriasis are present, fiery redness i.e. erythema becomes the most prominent symptom.
- Scaling is different than the chronic variety of psoriasis. They are not thick silvery white scales, there is superficial scaling in sheets.
- The skin pills off in large pieces.
Systemic symptoms of Erythrodermic Psoriasis
- Due to generalized inflammation of skin all over the body there is severe vasodilatation, so the patients of erythroderma loose excessive skin heat easily, this may lower their body temperature & they get shivering in order to maintain body temperature
- The protein in the body is lost due to excessive skin shedding, due to which body develops oedema especially on lower extremities. (swelling at ankles & feet due to fluid retention)
- This condition may lead to heart failure & failure of liver & kidneys as well.
- It becomes a medical emergency where patient needs to get admitted if he develops signs of shock, heart failure or severe hypothermia.

Causes of Erythrodermic Psoriasis
- Use of certain drugs like Antimalarials, Beta blockers, Lithium, NSAIDs, ACE inhibitors
- Oral steroids
- Alcoholism
- HIV Infection
- Severe sunburn
- Severe stress
- Sudden stoppage of ongoing treatment of psoriasis without doctor’s advice
- Any infection in already diagnosed psoriasis patient.
- can precipitate erythrodermic psoriasis in patients already having psoriasis
