How I Become Psoriasis Specialist and Why I Treat Only Psoriasis
Every journey begins with a purpose, and mine started with a deep-seated desire to make a difference. Yet, it wasn’t until a tragic incident that my mission in life crystallized, propelling me to dedicate myself entirely to the treatment of psoriasis.
In 2004, I came across a heartbreaking story in a local Marathi newspaper. The headline was chilling: “Mother Ends Life and That of Her Two Children Over Chronic Illness.” It detailed the tragedy of a 29-year-old woman who drowned herself and her young children in a village well.
The report included her suicide note, which read:
“The reason I’m taking this step is because of psoriasis.
Even after trying all kinds of treatments, it won’t go away.
It’s hereditary, and I’ve passed it on to my children.
Forgive me.”
The story mentioned above was featured in a local newspaper, accompanied by the following photo.
Her words were a cry of despair and hopelessness. This young mother had endured the physical discomfort, emotional trauma, and social stigma of living with psoriasis. The guilt of passing it on to her children overwhelmed her to the point of believing that ending their lives was a kinder fate than living with this disease.
This incident struck a chord deep within me. I could feel her pain, her frustration, and her longing for a solution that had eluded her. That day, I remembered why I had embarked on the path of treating psoriasis in the first place.
A Challenging Journey
Specializing in psoriasis wasn’t a straightforward decision. In the early years of my practice, success stories were rare, and the challenges were many. Psoriasis is a complex, chronic disease with no definitive cure, and treating it demands an intricate understanding of the condition and the patient’s unique experience.
Many of my colleagues doubted my decision to focus on a single condition. They dismissed it as impractical, even foolish. I faced criticism, discouragement, and moments of self-doubt. On particularly tough days, I contemplated returning to general practice, wondering if I was chasing an impossible goal.
But that mother’s story gave me clarity. It reminded me that psoriasis isn’t just a skin condition—it’s a battle that affects every aspect of a person’s life. The physical pain, emotional toll, and societal stigma can be unbearable. I resolved that I would do everything in my power to ensure no one else felt as hopeless as she did.
